The Centre for Companion Animals in the Community (CCAC) has been established by the Australian Veterinary Association as a centre of expertise on companion animal ownership and management.
Nearly two-thirds of Australian households have some kind of pet, and over half have dogs or cats. Recognising the high level of pet ownership in our community, the Centre for Companion Animals in the Community has as its vision "An Australian society which successfully integrates companion animals."
Successful integration of companion animals means working for the best outcomes for pets, pet owners, non-pet owners and the wider community.
The CCAC has been established to provide high quality information on key animal management issues, produced by experts in their field.

A new animal management resource
The new CCAC website has been launched, and takes a fresh approach to solving animal management issues.
We aim to bring you high quality information to assist in the development of effective and workable policy.
Barking dogs, leash laws, cat confinement, identification and strays are just a few of over 20 major topic areas covered on the site.
Most animal management issues are complex, and 'quick-fixes' are rare, so it is critical to have access to best practice and high quality evidence based information when addressing animal management policy in your community.

Latest articles of interest from the JAVMA.
Good afternoon all,
The following articles from the latest issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association may be of interest to some readers.
"A meeting of minds on the welfare of beef cattle" dicusses the May 28-30 International Symposium on Beef Cattle, which was held by the Beef Cattle Institute and considered timely in light of the recent release of footage showing abusive animal handling at a California slaughterhouse.
The article includes comment from Dr Temple Grandin as well as Prof Donald Broom (UK) and Dr Kevin Stafford (NZ), both of whom will be speaking at AAWS08.

"Collaborating on animal welfare" details several key decisions relating to animal welfare, that were made by the AVMA Board at their last meeting in June.
Among these were approval to hold an animal welfare symposium in 2009; to take part in a public education programme to improve the health and welfare of domestic cats; and, to partner with the ASPCA in developing a package of web-based materials designed to assist in identifying and addressing animal abuse and neglect, and in understanding the link between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence (which is the topic of a critical review to be presented by Samara McPhedran at AAWS08).
