Latest articles of interest from the JAVMA.

The following articles from the latest issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association may be of interest to some readers.
"A meeting of minds on the welfare of beef cattle" dicusses the May 28-30 International Symposium on Beef Cattle, which was held by the Beef Cattle Institute and considered timely in light of the recent release of footage showing abusive animal handling at a California slaughterhouse.
The article includes comment from Dr Temple Grandin as well as Prof Donald Broom (UK) and Dr Kevin Stafford (NZ), both of whom will be speaking at AAWS08.

"Collaborating on animal welfare" details several key decisions relating to animal welfare, that were made by the AVMA Board at their last meeting in June.

Animal Welfare Award
The Australian Animal Welfare Strategy is proud to be a sponsor of the 2008 Australian Agricultural Industries Young Innovators and Science Awards.
These annual awards are run by the Bureau of Rural Sciences and are for young people (18-35 years) working or studying in an agricultural, fisheries, forestry, food or natural resource industry.
Winners will receive up to $20 000 each to explore an emerging scientific issue or innovative activity over a 12 month period. One winner will also be recommended to receive the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Award, valued at an additional $30 000, to advance their research outcomes and career.
We are hoping for some strong entries from the animal welfare sector becuase as the conference has revealed there are some terrific young scientists doing amazing work to improve welfare across multiple industries and sectors.
Projects can relate to agriculture, fisheries, forestry, food and natural resource management industries, and funding may be used for a research project, an industry visit, further study into a specific area or attending a conference.
Applications close 14 July 2008.

Registrations for the AAWS08 Conference are flowing in - it is good to see the high level of interest in the conference translate into confirmed delegates. I can't wait to see everyone on the Gold Coast in nine weeks time.
We have extended the early bird deadline slightly to give people a little more time to register on this special rate. Early bird registration is just $700 - what a bargain for 3 full days of conference featuring 80 presentations. The closing date is now 11 July.
Registrations are being taken online, or you can download the registration brochure and fax or mail back your form.

Prof Donald Broom, MA, PhD, ScD, the world’s first Professor of Animal Welfare, and has held this post at Cambridge University’s Department of Veterinary Medicine since 1986.
Prof Marian Dawkins, MA DPhil Oxf, DSC (Hon) Guelph, Professor of Animal Behaviour at the University of Oxford and has a long-standing interest in animal consciousness and animal welfare, particularly that of poultry.
Dr Judy MacArthur Clark, CBE DVMS DLAS DipLAM FIBiol MRCVS, is Chief Inspector of the Home Office Animals (Scientific Procedures) Inspectorate, and formerly Chair of the Farm Animals Welfare Council and President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

Want info on the Gold Coast?
If you are looking for information on Queensland's Gold Coast, check out the website of the Gold Coast Tourist Information Centre.
AAWS08 is being held at Conrad Jupiters which is in Broadbeach, just south of the famous Surfers Paradise, a 20 minute drive north of the Gold Coast airport at Coolangatta, or an hour's drive south of Brisbane.
September is early spring, which means the weather on the Gold Coast should be fine and mild, with a temperature range of 15-25°C / 59-77°F, just right to get over the winter blues for those of us from colder parts of Australia.
